Lost!

We’re back from Singapore!! Didn’t blog the whole month I was there. Too busy and too lazy! Haha.

We flew Singapore Airlines and it didn’t disappoint! But what we were disappointed with was the taxi cab driver that took us home!

We had so many luggages that we had to take two taxis. We had four big suitcases, a small suitcase, a stroller, a big bag pack, a little bag pack, a tote bag, a hand bag, and a laptop bag. The laptop bag was black, I’d put it in the trunk of the cab. When we got out of the cab, we grabbed everything but the laptop bag! 🙁 It was night time, bag was black and I didn’t see it!! Plus EJ was making a fuss and we just wanted to get home asap and we didn’t check the trunk properly. We immediately called the taxi company to send out a message to their taxis, hoping the taxi driver will turn around and bring us back our bag. Nope. He didn’t. We arrived past 1am, so we were all tired, but we went and made a police report right away. Inside the bag was Eric’s work laptop, the iPad, my passport, my Singapore IC, Eric’s Hong Kong ID card, and our old expired passports that contained US visas. By the time we were done at the police station, it was already like 4am.

The next morning I went and applied for a new passport. I was so worried that the passport will take a month to process and I wouldn’t make my flight back and I would have to have my baby in Singapore! Well, luckily, it only took a week. My IC will take a month, but I don’t need that to travel. Someone else can help me collect my IC.

We also needed our passports to get new US visas so we can come back into the country. The American consulate in Singapore is very slow in their visa processing! We usually get it done in Canada. They have appointments everyday and you can collect it the next day. But in Singapore, they only have appointments twice a month (cos of Eric’s special visa) and you need to wait three working days before collecting. Luckily we weren’t able to change Eric’s flight to an earlier one, otherwise, he won’t even be able to get his visa. Next time, we’re just doing it in Canada. We got our passports back the day before we had to leave. It was close.

Eric was lucky that EY sent him another laptop so he can work from Singapore. Poor guy, he would stay up late and wake up early to work (cos of the time difference) and during the day still go out with us. Amazing stamina. EY should treasure an amazing employee like him!! (Thank you EY for the very nice performance bonus. Hehe)

Anyway, so sad about the taxi driver. Disappointed. We waited a month. A whole month. And he didn’t turn our things in. I thought Singaporeans were more honest than that. They’re probably greedier than I thought. Sad. Thankfully everything is replaceable in the bag. Maybe except for Eric’s HK ID card. We have no idea how we can go about that since we’re not in HK.

This caused much stress on our trip! It was always at the back of our minds. I thought I also lost my baby girl’s ultrasound pictures, but thankfully I’d placed them in my journal and not with the passports like I initially thought.

We’re back home safe and sound. EJ got his new iPad. It was like it was never lost from him. He plays it like a pro 🙂

Girls’ Night Out!

06 Jul 2012 09:37 pm | Category: Friends

So fun! Eric and his mom watched Hannah and EJ while Rie and I went out shopping! Woot! We spent so much time shopping that we didn’t even get time for dinner. Well, we did eat dessert before dinner. Haha. Why didn’t we do this before? So sad now Rie’s moving to Minnesota. No more GNO! :*(

Happy Father’s Day!

Father’s Day is here again! This year we didn’t really do much for Eric. EJ and I just made a card. Eric was leaving on a business trip that day, too! So, we didn’t make a special dinner for him or anything. We did go out to Sweet Tomatoes the night before. I was surprised he wanted salad!! Happy Father’s Day to Eric! EJ adores his daddy. 🙂

Sister Sarah Woo

13 Jun 2012 10:10 pm | Category: Family

18 months flew by just like that! Sister Woo’s done with her mission! She was able to get special permission to visit me on her way back to Singapore. She spent a week here and the week went by so fast! We stayed up chatting and she got to watch the last two Harry Potter movies. She also taught EJ how to say “Yiyi” (auntie in Chinese). And EJ will walk around saying “Yiyi, Yiyi, Yiyi”. Precious!!

EJ connected with her right away. Maybe because we look alike? Haha. Not really.

We sent her off to the airport tonight. Man! It was stressful! Her flight was at 7:40pm, and we planned to leave at 6:00, since it was only about 15 mins to the airport. We waited for Eric to get home so he can help us load her super heavy suitcases onto the car. 5:50, Eric texts and says he’ll be 15 mins late. 6:20, he texts and says he’s still stuck in traffic. In the mean time, Sis. Woo is still writing her love letter to her missionary. Lol! And I’m here stressing!!! Finally, 6:30, we got our neighbors to help us load the suitcases and I called Eric to say we’ll meet him at the airport.

We got there, I dropped her and the suitcases off and Eric was there to help check her in. I drove off to park the car. Eric called and said they were at the wrong terminal!!! It was Delta (Terminal A), but her flight was operated by Horizon (Terminal B). They had 7 mins to get to the other terminal. And according to Eric, the shuttle bus was so slow he didn’t think they’d make it. But they did. When they were checking in, one of her suitcases was too heavy, so she had to move some things over to the other suitcase. Finally, she was all checked in. We met up at the security check-in. Took a photo, said our farewells, and off she went! We actually managed to see her get on the plane since her gate was at the very end of the terminal, and when we walked outside, we could see her plane. We saw her, yelled “Bye, Sister Woo!”. She heard us and waved back.

There goes one week of fun sister bonding time! Till we meet again in Singapore next month!!

Memorial Day BBQ

01 Jun 2012 05:38 pm | Category: Food, Friends, Vacation

We had a nice long weekend last week. I saw something funny (kinda) on Facebook. It was a poster of an army cemetery and the caption below was something like, a reminder that Memorial Day isn’t national BBQ day. Definitely lots of people have BBQs on Memorial Day! Us included.

We had new neighbors move in that Saturday. Our good friends from church, actually! We’re really excited to have them as our next door neighbors! They have a teenage daughter, which means on-call babysitting for us! Haha! Well, the girls love playing with EJ and EJ gets so excited when they come over! Anyway, they held a BBQ and as soon as I could smell the meat cooking, we all headed next door! Haha. Of course we were invited.

So, I was a little worried about the food at the BBQ and how it might affect my blood sugar. I was sooo full! But my blood sugar level came out just fine. Phew~ So meat is ok! Of course, I made my own marinade with lemons and pepper and other non-sweet/non-BBQ sauces. Can’t have those. I’m getting the hang of this diet. But sometimes, I just want to have a big bowl of noodles!!!

Late night snack

27 May 2012 09:02 pm | Category: Food

With my GDM diet, I have to eat every 2-3 hours. That means, I need to eat at 10:30 before going to bed. Ah….. Sometimes I just want to go to bed at 8:30!! But no, I’m not allowed to go without food for more than 8-10 hours through the night. So, right now, even though I’m sleepy, I have to wait up just a little more so I can have my late night snack.

Seriously, I feel like my life is revolved around food now. I’m always thinking about what I’m going to eat for my next meal. Of course, if I plan better, I won’t have to be worrying about that. But it’s too many meals to plan! haha…. So, to make it easy, I’ll just eat salad and chicken.

My little angel (sometimes)

I love the sweet, innocent look of EJ when he’s fast asleep.

He’s growing older and getting sneakier and more mischievous now! He’ll fight for toys, hit other kids, and even push them! 🙁 I tell him to say sorry and give them a hug right away. Seriously, though. I hope he learns to share nicely. Well, he’ll share something that he doesn’t want, but come to his toy cars, he’s very possessive. Any moment can be a teaching moment with little kids. I hope he’ll learn to share nicely!!

Ouch!

I attended a three hour class for pregnant women with diabetes. We learned about all you needed to know about gestational diabetes, we did a meal plan, and we also learned how to test our blood sugar levels, aka, pricking our fingers! We had to all do it for the nurse in class so the nurse can make sure that we’re doing it right. I did such a great job in class (I always strive to be the A student, haha!), but when I came home, it was a fail! It took three needles, four pricks (I reused a needle), and two test strips before I was able to have a successful reading. Now my index, middle, and ring finger are sore. Boohoo. And I have to do this four times a day! Oh no! Once when I wake up, before eating anything, and then an hour after every meal. I have to do this until I deliver my baby. Aiyaiyaiyaiyai!

My first blood sugar reading with my brand new device was very good. And I even went out to eat! Good job, *pat on back* I know I need to keep my blood sugar at a safe, normal level for the benefit of the baby. It was quite scary learning about all the dangers too much sugar in my blood can cause the baby. So, even if I have to cut out all my favorite foods like chocolate, ice cream, and white rice, I’ll gladly do it for my baby.

It really is a big lifestyle change with the meal plan. I basically have to eat six times a day. I cannot go without food for more than 2-3 hours in my awake hours, and my breakfast the next day cannot be more than 8-10 hours from my last meal/snack from the previous day. That means, I can’t go to bed and sleep for more than 10 hours because I need to eat! And being pregnant, that’s hard, cos sometimes all I want to do is go to bed when EJ goes to bed! That’s what I did last night, actually. I went to bed at 8:30 at night. I didn’t get breakfast until almost 8 in the morning, so that’s almost 12 hours without food. That’s a no-no. So, even though I’m so sleepy right now, I have to stay up a little bit longer so I can have my last snack of the day. I guess I can always wake up earlier… neh.

Eating that many meals a day is actually a lot. For example, I need 3 servings of a milk a day. THREE! I only usually do just one, if even that! But I can’t drink milk in the morning because sugars in the mornings are bad (can’t do fruit in the morning or night either), so I have to squeeze milk into the rest of the day. The nurse says it may seem like a lot, but you’re just eating smaller meals more often throughout the day. That makes sense. And so far on this diet, I lost 3 pounds last week. And this week, another half pound so far. It’s good, I guess, that I’m losing weight, right?

Anyhow, we have to keep meticulous data of our blood sugar ratings. A nurse will call every week to get my data and make sure I’m managing my blood sugar well. Good! I need someone to keep me accountable! I’m worried about the month in Singapore, though. Don’t think the nurse will call Singapore, and eating all that greasy food might cause chaos to my blood sugar!
